Thomas A. Young, 88, Southmont, passed away on April 25, 2021. Born February 15, 1933 in Altoona, son of Horace Schrader and Martha (Abrams) Young. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Megan E. Barron. Survived by his wife of 64 years, Claryne (Bowman) Young, and children; Elizabeth Ward (J. Patrick), Coral Springs, FL; Carolyn Strunk (Don), Pittsburgh; Susan Will (Dean), Wexford; Thomas B. Young, Johnstown; and John Young (Stephanie Sedor), Ebensburg. Also survived by grandchildren Jason Barron, Christy Timmins (Carrie); Laura Ploszay (Stephen); Susan Strunk; Kay Will; Kayla Wirfel (Jon); Abigail Young; Benjamin Young; along with 6 great-grandchildren. Also survived by sister and brother-in-law Kathy (Bowman) and Gary Hatch; niece Heather Rogers (Chris); all of Cary, NC, and nephew Garrett Hatch Graham (John), Haverford.

Tom graduated from Johnstown High School, the University of Pittsburgh, and Harvard Law School. He enlisted in the Army National Guard for 2 years during the Korean War. He was a practicing attorney in Johnstown for over 60 years, where he was a past president of the Cambria County Bar Association; former member of the board of directors of Moxham National Bank, Johnstown Bank and Trust; Laurel Bank, and Promistar Corporation. For many years he taught business law at UPJ and was a weekly columnist for the Tribune Democrat. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa; the Pelican Bay Foundation of Naples, FL; The Harvard Club of Naples, FL; the Sunnehanna Country Club, and the Westmont Presbyterian Church, where he was a past elder and member of the chancel choir. Tom will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Friends will be received on Wednesday from 6-8 PM at the Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary, Inc., 921 Menoher Blvd. Funeral service will be held on Thursday at noon at the Westmont Presbyterian Church, Rev. Dr. Rene’ Whitaker officiating. Masks and social distancing will be expected at both venues. Interment at Grandview Cemetery.

The family suggests contributions be made to the Westmont Presbyterian Church; Arbutus Park Manor; Windber Hospice; or a charity of one’s choice in memory of Tom.
