From the start? Probably nothing on vanilla. But you can craft gem staves relatively early. - or find a wand of sparkling...
Whether it's crimson or corruption this is quite similar? I mean, corruption has vilethorn, but you still need to go down the chasms to get one.
its crimson counterpart, the crimson rod however isn't really useful as a main weapon. It can be a nice utility weapon though, being a pre-hardmode nimbus rod.

edit: when it comes to gem staves, I think the one that is the easiest to craft related to how powerful it is, the amber rod. it requires an expedition to the underground desert, but otherwise all components are there, and aren't randomly somewhere, like other gems. and it's as powerful as ruby rod, only beaten in power by diamond rod which can be much more a hassle to craft. I mean, these are still all early game weapon, but I would say a ruby/amber/diamond rod can easily carry you up to skeletron.

Good Luck XD

If you don't go for absolutely pure mage (but you can't quite even if you wanted, without a magic weapon first XD - although you can just grab one from an earlier playthrough or something - but that aside, if you can use other weapons too, I would recommend buying a bunch of granades, before going down the underground desert XD

I've discussed this topic before in a different thread, though there are heavy spoilers in it if you wish to avoid those [spoiler thread].

One of the cooler updates to Mage Class around 1.4.1(.2) is the ability to progress the Class outside of combat. This would require the Player to have interest in Homestead activities however, and to also be a bit more on the patient side, seeing as how some things will be left up to random chance, but not all.

As you can see below, it's possible to buy a "complete set" of Mage Armor before engaging in any major story beats, exploration or Boss fights [Magic Hat, Mystic Robe].

There are certain benefits to progressing Mage Class in this way [Township], that might allow it to be the "more desirable choice", Pylons are one good reason, along with the other benefits of using the NPC Happiness system [economy, resource management, world domestication, etc.]. It can go as fast or as slow as you're willing to invest, but you don't always get to choose, which is one drawback from the more straightforward methods...

...along with this would include the planting and farming of Gem Trees, but that's getting into the realm of progression bias, which I'm totally against, but I figured painting a more clear picture was the only fair thing to do, if I'm gonna discuss Pay-to-Win tactics.

I didn't really thought about armors regarding the thread, but you're right with that.
Although I think, gem robes are also a good alternative, and if you go to the desert for the amber staff, might as well gather enough amber for the amber robe as well. and wearing a gem robe greatly increases the chance for Tim to appear too, to get a mage hat.
So, I guess both ways could work.
